The New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys are among the teams monitoring Davante Adams’ situation after the star wide receiver requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, league sources said Wednesday. Both teams have checked with the Raiders regarding Adams, the sources said.
The Raiders are not in a rush to make a move until a team reaches their asking price — but Adams wants out as soon as possible, according to league sources. Las Vegas has told teams it would consider trade packages for Adams that include a second-round pick and additional compensation.
Adams — a six-time Pro Bowler — has been at the center of trade rumors since last year. The Raiders are just 16-22 since acquiring Adams, and his frustration has become public at times. But a rift emerged this week when a screenshot circulated on social media that appeared to show coach Antonio Pierce “liking” an Instagram post insinuating Adams could be traded.
Adams didn’t play in the Raiders’ (2-2) win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday because of a hamstring injury. He attended the game and was on the sidelines in street clothes.
He has 18 catches for 209 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. The 31-year-old is coming off his fourth consecutive 100-catch season.
If the Raiders trade Adams, the team’s 2025 salary cap hit would be $15.7 million in dead money. Any team that trades for Adams will be on the hook for $13.5 million. Since the season has started, the Raiders have already paid down some of his base salary. Las Vegas also has the ability to turn some of Adams’ remaining salary into a signing bonus in order to lower his salary further and facilitate a trade. Teams have done that in the past, such as when the Denver Broncos paid down Von Miller’s base salary to get a higher pick from the Los Angeles Rams.
The Jets (2-2) emerged as an immediate option for an Adams trade because of a familiar face. A trade to New York would reunite Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played together in Green Bay for eight seasons. Earlier this summer, Adams said: “If I’m going to be reunited with anybody, it would be Aaron.” New York’s No. 1 receiver, Garrett Wilson, has struggled to start the season, averaging 47.8 receiving yards per game. Adams would deepen a wide receiver room that also includes Allen Lazard and Mike Williams.
The Cowboys (2-2), meanwhile, could use another top receiver to pair with CeeDee Lamb, who signed a four-year, $136 million contract before the season. Outside of Lamb and tight end Jake Ferguson, only Jalen Tolbert (13 catches) has 10-plus receptions through four games.
How Adams could fit with the Cowboys
Wide receiver is not the Cowboys’ biggest need. Help along the defensive line or at running back are probably higher priorities. But adding a player like Adams would certainly boost the offense and improve a team that doesn’t appear to be on the same level as the Dallas teams that have won 12 games each of the last three seasons. A receiving corps of Lamb, Adams, Tolbert and Brandin Cooks, coupled with Ferguson, would give Dak Prescott and the Cowboys one of the NFL’s best passing attacks.
The biggest issue in completing a deal is that Adams is signed beyond this season. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has said recently that they would be hesitant to trade for a player signed beyond the 2024 season because of the money they plan on owing Prescott, the league’s highest-paid player, Lamb, the league’s second-highest-paid non-quarterback, and Micah Parsons, who is expected to eventually get a contract that makes him the highest-paid non-QB.
But if the front office believes some type of spark is needed for the team to have any chance at making a deep playoff run, there aren’t many realistic deals that could move the needle more than adding Adams. — Jon Machota, Cowboys staff writer
