Cowboys Dalton Schultz franchise tag decision Dak and Zack Martin restructure

Between all the salaries, signing bonuses, roster bonuses, all the guaranteed language, potential restructures, and voidable years, much of this month is about numbers for the Dallas Cowboys. A sizable one could develop soon. Tuesday at 3 p.m. is the deadline for NFL teams to designate players with the franchise tag. At $10.9 million, tight end Dalton Schultz is the Cowboys’ strongest candidate. Meanwhile, with the 2022 league year beginning next Wednesday, restructures and pay cuts are on the table elsewhere to free up cap space. Part of the reason Schultz could get tagged is the optimism surrounding a potential long-term extension. If the Cowboys were pessimistic, the prospect of Schultz counting $10.9 million against the salary cap all season would reduce the tag’s appeal. Instead, the tag can operate as a placeholder between the sides as discussions continue, ensuring Schultz won’t become a free agent next week. Defensive end Randy Gregory is a notable option, but at $17.9 million, he is not much of one. Other numbers for the Cowboys are more relevant. There is the $20 million salary Prescott is scheduled to earn next season. That should decrease sharply soon. The team designed his contract with a restructure on that number envisioned, as they added two voidable years to the end of a four-year deal. That structure allows the Cowboys to enact conversion language already written in his contract and convert a large portion of the $20 million into a signing bonus, which will be spread evenly across the cap for five years. The maximum amount of cap space Prescott’s automatic conversion can produce is $16.2 million. It is possible the actual savings will fall closer to $15 million, depending on what the Cowboys decide Prescott’s new salary will be. That should get done in the next week. Wide receiver Amari Cooper is due a $20 million salary, too. Presuming wide receiver Michael Gallup signs a long-term deal, which is expected, the Cowboys are all but certain to release or trade Cooper before his salary becomes fully guaranteed on March 20. The split can create $16 million in immediate cap space. Right guard Zack Martin has an $11.8 million salary and $20.2 million cap hit in 2022. Both numbers will be knocked down with a restructure, which has become an annual rite of passage for Martin, right there with his on-field excellence. Martin has three seasons left on his contract.
