Thoughts On The DALLAS COWBOYS not ruling out signing Richard Sherman...

Among the many improvements they hope to make in 2021, the Dallas Cowboys are looking to have a significantly improved defense next year and took a step in that direction with the firing of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. The Cowboys could continue those steps in free agency this offseason as they have yet to rule out signing All-Pro defensive back Richard Sherman, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker. Sherman, a former fifth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks out of Stanford in 2011, just finished his third season with the San Francisco 49ers. It was also the final year on his contract, which paid him a base salary of $8 million this year, according to Spotrac. But of course, Sherman would have to be interested in Dallas to even entertain the idea of playing for the franchise. According to Walker, “it stands to reason,” that the Cowboys are open to the idea of bringing in Sherman to the roster and helping the defense out. Walker did not report on any interest or lack of interest from Sherman’s side of things. It would no doubt be an addition to a defense that, in its one year under Nolan, struggled tremendously. In his one year with the Cowboys, Nolan couldn’t seem to establish a defense that was strong enough to win the NFC East and get to the playoffs. Dallas ranked 23rd in the league in total defense, giving up 386.4 yards per game and 28th in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score 29.6 points per game. The Cowboys gave up 30 or more points to opposing teams, eight times in the course of this year’s 6-10 season that resulted in them finishing in a tie for second place in the division. But Nolan’s firing might actually help the Cowboys land, Sherman. Dallas hired Dan Quinn, the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and, more importantly, the former defensive coordinator for Sherman in Seattle, to fill the defensive coordinator role. “A lot of times, it’s just knowing the guy’s strengths and just playing toward them,” Sherman said of Quinn’s defensive scheme, according to CBS. “He won’t put guys out of positions and ask them to do something crazy. Now, from time to time, you’ve got to put guys where they’re uncomfortable just to make the defense work but, for the most part, he’s going to put guys in the best possible position [to succeed regularly].” It appears that Quinn also has strong feelings towards Sherman.
