The average audience figure was up 12 per cent over Fox’s broadcast of the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions on the same day in 2019, but it was down seven per cent when compared to CBS’s Thanksgiving day coverage of the Buffalo Bills’ defeat of the Cowboys last year. The game was also the least-viewed Cowboys game on Thanksgiving since 2017, when 26.28 million people watched their fixture against the Chargers. Despite that, Washington’s victory still ranked as the most-watched television broadcast of any genre in the US since February’s Super Bowl, while it also outperformed every non-NFL sports broadcast since November 2016, when a whopping 40 million viewers watched the Chicago Cubs win game seven of the World Series. Meanwhile, CBS’s Thanksgiving day game between the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions drew 23.4 million viewers, meaning the average across the two networks was around 26.86 million. NBC was also scheduled to broadcast the Baltimore Ravens’ trip to the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, but the game was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak among the visiting team. The Thanksgiving day figures are the latest sign of the NFL’s TV ratings holding relatively firm this year despite the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the midseason point, it was reported by the Associated Press that the NFL’s ratings were down six per cent compared to the same stage last year, which is a stark contrast to some of the double-digit declines seen by other major leagues in 2020.
