Dallas Cowboys Offense Should Help Out The Defense | Complementary Football

By Jean-Jacques Taylor This Cowboys defense is bad. Perhaps abject is a better word. Just look at the numbers: • 26th in yards allowed per game (404.7) • 28th in passing yards allowed per game (277) • 30th in points allowed per game (32.3) • 30th in pass plays of 20-plus yards (14) • 31st in passer rating (114.1) Now, you can certainly hope the defense gets better Sunday against Cleveland, but you should also be prepared to deal with the reality that it won’t. After all, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is trying to implement a new scheme known for its complexities without the benefit of a normal offseason or training camp. He’s also essentially trying to run a 3-4 defense with 4-3 personnel. That’s why he’s asking defensive ends Everson Griffen and DeMarcus Lawrence to rush from a two-point stance when they’ve earned league honors and tens of millions rushing from a three-point stance. The results, thus far, haven’t been good. In three games and 144 pass rushes, they have combined for one sack, two quarterback hits, and 12 pressures. Hooray. This defense, we were told, was supposed to be much better in 2020 even though Byron Jones, their best defensive player last season, signed for $82.5 million over five years with Miami. There’s no difference-maker in the secondary, which is an issue. Injuries to Anthony Brown and Chidobe Awuzie have compromised the secondary, but neither of those players is a No. 1 cornerback. Rookie Trevon Diggs has shown potential, but he’s also been beaten deep on several occasions. Safety has been a trouble spot. Who’s surprised? We were told the additions of defensive tackles Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe along with Griffen would give Dallas one of the best defensive lines in the league. We were told linebackers Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch were one of the NFL’s best linebacker tandems. And we were told the secondary would be just fine even though Jones left. Only Aldon Smith has been better than advertised. He’s been terrific, despite playing football for the first time since 2015 because of substance abuse issues. He had three sacks against Seattle and leads the NFL with four. Hardly anything Jerry told us about the 2020 Cowboys defense has come true. McCoy was hurt in training camp and Vander Esch has hurt 23 defensive snaps into the opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Now you know why Jerry Jones may just be the greatest hype man ever. Better than P.T. Barnum. And Don King, too. Poe and Griffen have been solid, but not special, and Lawrence has spent the past two games playing through a knee injury that would’ve kept most other dudes on the bench. The secondary has been torched. All of this means the Dallas offense must be virtually perfect. So it can’t turn the ball over three times as it did against Seattle and Atlanta. In the past two games, opposing offenses have started six drives in Dallas territory, turning that into three touchdowns and three field goals. That’s one reason the Cowboys have led for just 13:27 this season. Dak Prescott has thrown 143 passes this season, but only two have come with the Cowboys leading. Frankly, the blessing is the Cowboys are 1-2 and still atop the raggedy NFC East with the Washington Football Team. The turnovers. The shady defense. The poor start. All of it has kept the Cowboys from playing the style of football coach Mike McCarthy said they needed to play.
