My Observations of LUKE GIFFORD Dallas Cowboys Linebacker

DESCRIPTION
Gifford grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, starring as a dual-threat quarterback and defensive back at Southeast High School. Therefore, it was natural for him to sign on with the Cornhuskers, though injuries really prevented him from making a full-season impact until his senior year. As a redshirt freshman, he played in six games (seven tackles, one for loss) before a hip injury sidelined him. He played in just four games the following year, assisting on one tackle. He finally landed a starting job as a junior (39 tackles, five for loss, and 1.5 sacks in seven games), but another hip injury prematurely ended his campaign. Gifford managed to play in all 12 games in 2018, earning a team captaincy and garnering honorable mention All-Big Ten notice with 62 stops and team highs in tackles for loss (13) and sacks (5.5).
Overview
Thin-boned edge prospect whose narrow base and below-average play strength at the point of attack makes it difficult for him to establish himself as a consistent presence. Gifford's motor and silky spin move are rush traits that should give his draft status some life, but he's in the developmental phase where both his strength and skill level are in need of improvement before he's ready to be a pro.
Strengths
Above-average pursuit speed and closing burst
Long frame has room for additional muscle and mass
Showed off explosive lower body at pro day testing
Good short area reactive athleticism for an edge defender
Plays with low pad level when charging forward
Shows ability to change direction as rusher without gearing down
Able to re-ignite an edge burst with his secondary rush
Slick footwork for sudden spin counters as a rusher
Able to drop and matchup in space
Weaknesses
Missed extensive time in both 2015 and 2017 due to injury
Thin through hips with narrow frame
Doesn't keep his frame clean with proper hand usage
Gets banged around due to below-average contact balance
Will struggle to post up and hold his ground vs
power
Short rush strides hinder ability to gain ground to the edge
Can't convert his speed to power at the top of the rush
Long tackles will punch and disable his attack
Can be out of control as tackler in space
