The Timeline of Jason Garrett: March 28, 1966 – Jason was born in Abington, Pennsylvania to parents Jane and Jim Garrett. They moved shortly after to Jersey and then Ohio where they stayed through Jason’s grade school. 1974-83: Jason spent his high school education at a parochial institution at University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio, and was a letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. As a senior, he won football All-League honors as a quarterback and safety but fell short of accomplishing a state title. No offers from any major collegiate programs were received. Fall 1984: Due to high academic scores and the financial capability of his parents, Jason was enrolled at Princeton and became a starter, throwing for 64/116 for 996 yards for the year. Fall 1985: Jason joined his younger brother, John, as well as his father, Jim, on the Columbia team as transfers. Columbia had recently experienced a troubling football history, and the Garrett family was brought in to bring success right away. His father, the head coach, instantly installed Jason as quarterback and John as running back, both as starters. No surprise, here. However, what did surprise many was how awful they were together at Columbia. The Garrett’s went 0-10, getting blown out of many games. Jim was noted by the New York Times as saying this team’s chemistry was full of “addicts”, as in addicted to losing. Fall 1986: The Garrett family left as a unit to join Princeton, where Jason had just previously experienced marginal success offensively. Through regulations, the Garrett boys had to sit out a year for eligibility requirements. Fall 1987: The family added their brother Judd as a split end to the offensive repertoire as their record and skills continued to get better. January 1988: Jim got an offer to be a scout for the Dallas Cowboys at the pro level and decided it was best to pursue a higher paying opportunity. October 9, 1988: In what started as a promising campaign with several consecutive wins, Princeton lost to Columbia – snapping Columbia’s then-collegiate-record 44-game skid – with Jason having his worse game of his college career with poor clock management and taking a critical sack late in the game. More astoundingly, this loss would eventually keep them from title contention. February 25, 1989: Jerry Jones purchases Dallas Cowboys Fall 1989: Jason finally finished with winning a share of the Ivy-league title in his final senior year at Princeton. Summer 1990: Jason went undrafted in the NFL, instead was signed to the practice squad with the New Orleans Saints September 3, 1990: Jason was cut by the Saints. Fall 1990: Judd leads Princeton to a championship 1991: Signed as QB for the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football, but separated his shoulder on a sack during the first play of the first game. Eventually dropped and signed by the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League June 4. Released in August. 1992: After being out for football for almost an entire year, his father once again was there to help. As a scout for the Cowboys, Jim placed Jason on the practice squad to give his players added repetitions. At this time, the owner of the Cowboy’s, Jerry Jones, had recently fired Tex Shramm, the longtime general manager, and assumed complete control over football matters. Moreover, Jim was a part of the war room committee that had brought in Super Bowl caliber talent – He had Jerry’s complete trust by this point.
